Things to Consider Before Buying a Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select

Purchasing a new machine for your morning coffee is an important decision, and the Dutch-made Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select is an excellent coffee maker. But is it right for you?

If you’re looking for a coffee machine that brews a half or full pot of coffee in minutes, then look no further. The KBGV is one of the most sophisticated home coffee machines, and any coffee enthusiast will appreciate it.

But what makes the Technivorm Moccamaster so unique? They’ve been hand-making the quietest coffee machines since 1968, and they offer Moccamaster’s extraordinary 5-year warranty with lifetime repairs on all models.

Technivorm Moccamaster has also received the Gold Cup Standard awarded after rigorous testing from the Specialty Coffee Association. This award measures the 4 T’s of outstanding coffee: temperature, time, turbulence, and total dissolved solids.

The KBGV Select model is very similar to the Technivorm Moccamaster KBG. Both are quality drip coffee makers that include this company’s innovative brew features. But the Technivorm Moccamaster KBG lacks the full-carafe selector switch.

All that sounds great, right? But maybe you’re looking for something else. I recommend checking out our review of the 13 Best Brewers. And then come back here and take a closer look at the Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker.

The European-Made Moccamaster KBGV Select is an automatic drip-stop filter basket coffee machine.  This coffee brewer delivers quality coffee in minutes with an automatic shut-off feature that triggers after 100 minutes.

It includes a 10-cup capacity glass carafe, a heating plate, a removable brewing basket, several paper coffee filters to start you out, and a brown coffee scoop. It also has a full-carafe switch that lets you brew two sizes.

Every Moccamaster model provides a copper boiling element hidden inside. In addition, the Moccamaster KBGV Select includes the 9-hole showerhead outlet arm to ensure an even distribution of boiling water over the coffee grounds.

I have a few favorite features of this model that I’m sure you’ll appreciate.

Copper Heating Element

Tucked away inside every Moccamaster is the copper brewing element. This feature may be the primary reason their machines are so outstanding. That’s because it gets the water to the correct temperature fast.

Moccamaster KBGV Select water temperature

The temperature of the water while brewing makes a big difference to the overall quality of the coffee. This copper element heats the water to the perfect brewing temperature: 196°F – 205°F and ensures a thorough extraction of flavor and fewer remnants left in the pot.

In other words, near-perfect cups of coffee for you to enjoy.

Quick Brew Time

This coffee brewer makes ten cups in 4-6 minutes without losing the complete coffee flavor profile and bloom time. Can you believe that brewing time? Yet it still makes perfectly-brewed coffee!

The plastic cone-shaped basket contributes to the ideal extraction and saturation of the freshly-ground coffee, despite the brewing time and brew capacity. Imagine having a whole pot of coffee hot and waiting five minutes after you start.

9-Hole Water Outlet Arm

This showerhead outlet arm is one of my favorite features, and I wouldn’t drink a cup of coffee using any other method. In addition, the 9-hole showerhead outlet arm contributes to the overall coffee experience.

The showerhead design spreads the water over the pre-ground coffee during the brewing process, thoroughly saturating the coffee grounds and ensuring they bloom for maximum flavor. It provides the smoothest coffee without the pour-over hassle.

Half Carafe Option

I don’t always want a whole coffee pot in the morning, so this excellent feature lets me select my brew size, either 20 or 40 ounces. This brew size is unique to the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select and makes it worth checking out.

5-year warranty and lifetime repairs

This impressive warranty will be worth it if you brew as often as I do. Moccamaster backs up their quality products with a lengthy five-year warranty that will give you peace of mind.

They also offer lifetime repairs on all parts. And because most of their pieces are removable, you won’t be out of coffee for long with this durable coffee maker.

The Drawbacks

Of course, like all good things in life, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select has a few drawbacks that might be a deal-breaker. So let’s take a closer look.

Water Reservoir Isn’t Removable

I don’t keep my machine near my sink, so I like removing my water tank. This machine lets me brew a half carafe of coffee, so I don’t have to fill the water tank every time. But it’s still an inconvenience.

I keep a jug of cold water around to resolve this issue, but I still list this as a negative to consider.

No Manual Drip-Stop

Some Moccamaster models include a manual drip-stop, like the Moccamaster KBTS. This design feature lets you control the coffee flow and offers a more hands-on experience.

Moccamaster KBGV Select manual drip-stop

With a manual drip-stop, I can open the plastic brew basket and stir up the coffee bed to ensure total saturation and extraction of the coffee oils. It also lets me slow it down enough for a one-cup option.

Hot, Exposed Elements

I list this as a cautionary tale, not necessarily as a deal-breaker. The nine-hole showerhead outlet arm is made entirely of exposed metal. It reaches the same optimal temperature of the brew, about 200°F. I have a habit of placing my hand on the top of the filter basket when I grab the glass carafe. Ouch!

No Bells, No Whistles, and No Programmable Features

Who doesn’t like waking up to the aroma of fresh coffee brewing in the morning? This is a pretty big deal. Unfortunately, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select doesn’t have delay-brew features. If you’re like me, this can make for a miserable morning. However, it does brew a whole pot in a 4-6 minute brewing cycle.

What else doesn’t it do? This machine doesn’t let you select cup sizes or brew types. You won’t be able to make cold brew or espresso. It brews coffee, and that’s it.

Should You Try It?

Purchasing any drip coffee brewer is a big decision and one that will set you up for you’re entire day. The Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select is one of the most sophisticated home coffee machines that guarantee balanced coffee in every pot.

However, it is also an expensive drip coffee maker. If you’re a drip coffee enthusiast looking for something more affordable in your coffee experience, I recommend the Braun Brew Sense Drip Coffee Maker. Not only does it come with an attractive price tag, but it offers a lot of programmable features to ensure your coffee quality.

If you really want all the common features of coffee brewing, I recommend checking out our review of the Ninja Coffeemakers. The Ninja DualBrew is an excellent choice that serves balanced coffee and so much more.

Overall, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select is a quality coffee machine for a coffee aficionado who wants the smoothest coffee without any hassles.

Happy Caffeinating!
